A self-published book, installation and performance evening.

‘Beneath the fabric’ was more of a platform than an exhibition. A platform for people to explore their own writing and storytelling performances, as well as a platform to come together and share our different experiences and perspectives. These were explored in two outcomes. The first was a publication, featuring a collection of personal stories from contributors, centred around an object. The book was displayed in the exhibition along with the personal objects people submitted. This was a space for people to share something from their lives, and for each of us to learn. For some it was about unlocking a new part of their creativity, and for others about remembering something special.

These objects were displayed within a bespoke installation: the storytelling tent. A space designed in collaboration with interior design students. This was composed of second-hand sheets and fabrics- each holding their own story of a past owner- folded, hung and draped to reminisce times of being read stories under a blanket fort as a kid. Sentences from the stories are screen printed throughout. One in particular stands out to encourage participants to step into this forgotten world of youthful imagination: “Bow pay your respects to the otherworldly and always, always, ask for safe passage”.

The installation hosted an evening of spoken word and storytelling performances from contributors to the book as well as some external performers. Together we learnt of folk tales, poignant moments from other’s lives, humorous childhood anecdotes and even the local pubs.

Its about how we all have something valuable to share and learn from one another, and how these collective experiences can foster empathy, in a divisive world that seems all to desperate to prevent that.

‘Beneath the fabric’ is an ongoing project and we are always looking to expand our archive of personal stories, and create spaces for shared empathy through installation and storytelling events. Please get in touch if you are interested.
